"EMOtherapy" Available Now

Emotherapy is a emo-triphop album from Kamau Jawara. The album draws influences from 1980s alternative and emo-indie music and merges these styles with that of modern rap, R&B, and electronic music. The album takes a deep look at themes of depression, and identity, posing the question of what we live for. EMOtherapy features apperances from KAIO 13, Rob Apollo, Wavemaster Jay, Safi, DK, and JayCan.

EMOtherapy is a satire of the public perception of depression, exploring themes of identity, self-hatred, & suicide. Here Mau takes up the role of our speaker as he guides us through his narrative, using himself as a foil for his surroundings. The speaker goes unnamed as this ultimately isn't very important to the story. But what is important is the speaker's tendency to be unreliable and even minimal in his Lyrics--often going from being content to in a state of chaos.

While very melodic in composition, the album is rich with aggressive 808s, melancholy guitar melodies, & brutally descriptive lyrics. Here Mau taps moody alternative greats such as The Smiths and Nine Inch Nails and applies them to modern song structures consistent with artists like Kanye West and Timbaland.

The album expresses the taboo nature of depression by starting with ambient & ambiguous arrangements but the tracks grow more aggressive over the span of the album to finish with what can only be describes as gory. But perhaps this is the nature of depression. It goes unnoticed until something incredibly awful occurs.
